"Gitmo", How Cute

I would like to register, for the record, my objection to the cutesy abbreviation "Gitmo".

One also should not refer to Bergen-Belsen as "Bergie", nor to Lubyanka as "the Loob".

John, I have left you this same comment on the Hedgehog Blog. The point is, that Gitmo is not Bergen-
Belsen, and its not Lubyanka. The prisoners there are not imprisoned simply because they are Jews, or Gypsies, or gay. They are not in prison because they peacefully dissented against their government. They are in prison at Gitmo because they were Al Qeda terrorists or members of the Taliban militia that supported them, and they were captured by our troops during the Afghan campaign. They are not being murdered or worked to death on starvation rations. Some of them are, thank goodness, exposed to some pretty rough interrogation sessions to try to extract information that will prevent future 9/11s.

Moreover, the name "Gitmo" predates the prison located there. It is derived from the official U.S. Navy abbrieviation for the United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which is NAVSTA GTMO. The Guantanamo Bay Naval Station is the United States' oldest overseas naval base, having been founded in February 1903. I suspect that the sailors and marines stationed there have called it Gitmo from the Getgo.
